Sertraline (Zoloft)
Zoloft is a brand name for Sertraline, which is an antidepressant in the group of drugs known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs). It is not completely understood how SSRIs work, but it is believed by researchers that they restore chemical balance in the brain or affect the positive communication between the central nervous system and the nerve cells. Sertraline can be used by itself or in a combination with other drugs for patients that struggle with:
- Panic disorder
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder
- Major depression
- Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
- Anxiety disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
It is also prescribed for:
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Seasonal affective disorder
- Fibromyalgia
Side effects of Sertraline:
During the first 10 days, you may experience nausea which wears off as your body gets used to it.
Here are some side effects, if they continue, please contact your doctor:
- Loss of appetite
- Increased sweating
- Upset stomach
- Trouble sleeping
- Nausea
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Dry mouth
- Diarrhoea
Contact your doctor if these symptoms are experienced, as they can become serious:
- Decreased interest in sex
- Decrease in sexual ability. (Ejaculation delay)
- Unusual weight loss
- Easy bruising/bleeding
- Muscle cramps/weakness
- Shaking (tremor)
And if you experience the following seek medical attention immediately:
- Black or blood stool
- Blurred vision
- Vomits that seem like coffee grounds
- Eye pain
- Swelling or redness of the eye
- Widened pupils
- Vision changes
