Visiting the Dentist when you have Fibromyalgia

Visiting the dentist for anyone can be a stressful and painful experience. For those with Fibromyalgia it can also involve Pain amplification, inflammation and anxiety turning a simple visit into a huge ordeal resulting in a major flare.

Because our condition changes so rapidly it is always advisable to take someone with you when you are attending your appointment. If you are still working, try to either take the rest of the day off from work or make the appointment as late as you can. This will give you the opportunity to rest once you’re finished.

Due to the fact most sufferers are hypersensitive to pain, it is highly unlikely you will have a examination without discomfort due to the fact you will have your mouth open for a long time. There will also be sharp objects poking your gums, as well as drilling, scraping, tugging and lots of vibrations.

To help you and your body cope with this better, it may be worth taking medications before you go to help not only with the pain, but the anxiety of all that is happening as well. If you are then told not to eat or drink following the visit, at least the medication will already be in your system to help.

Once you are in the dentist chair and before any work begins, make the dentist, hygienist and nurse aware of all your medical conditions and medication you take as well as any worries or concerns you may have. It can be very painful and draining keeping your mouth open wide for long periods of time, even more so if you suffer from Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ), so ask to take regular breaks so you can take some deep breaths to calm and relax yourself so you can continue.

Finally, the ordeal is over and you’ve made it back home.

Now is the time to rest and recover until the next time.

Preparing yourself in advance will really help both you and your body cope much better with those 6 monthly visits.

After all, if you don’t look after the health of your mouth, it will only lead you down the road of more excoriating pain on top of what you are already dealing with.
