Medication – Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is a medication in the Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory drug class that is used for treating pain, fever, and inflammation. This includes painful Menstrual periods, Migraines, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Ibuprofen is used to treat pain and stiffness caused by Fibromyalgia. 

Ibuprofen can increase your risk of fatal Heart Attack or Stroke. Do not use it before or after Heart Bypass Surgery. Use the correct doses, the doses your doctor prescribed to you. If not used correctly it can cause stomach or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal.

Talk to your doctor about taking Ibuprofen and find out if it is safe to use if you have had:

  • Heart Disease, High Blood Pressure, High Cholesterol, Diabetes, or if you smoke
  • A Heart attack, Stroke, or Blood Clot
  • Stomach ulcers or bleeding
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Asthma
  • If you take Aspirin to prevent Heart Attack or Stroke.

Side effects:

If you have signs of an allergic reaction to Ibuprofen (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or severe reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, pale skin, red or skin rash) get Emergency Medical Help.

Stop using Ibuprofen and call your doctor at once if you have these side effects:

  • Changes in your vision
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling or rapid weight gain
  • A skin rash, no matter how mild
  • Signs of stomach bleeding-blood or tarry stools, coughing up blood or vomit that looks like coffee grounds
  • Liver problems
  • Nausea
  • Upper stomach pain
  • Itching
  • Tired feeling, flu-like symptoms, loss of appetite
  • Dark urine, clay-coloured stools
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes)
  • Low red blood cells (Anemia)-pale skin
  • Feeling light-headed or short of breath, rapid heart rate
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Kidney problems-little or no urinating, painful or difficult urination
  • Swelling in your feet or ankles

Common Ibuprofen side effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting, gas
  • Bleeding
  • Dizziness, headache

Before using Ibuprofen talk to your doctor about other medication your using, especially:

  • Cyclosporine
  • Lithium
  • Methotrexate
  • A blood thinner such as Warfarin, Coumadin or Jantoven
  • Heart or blood pressure medication, including a diuretic or “water pill”
  • Steroid medicine such as Prednisone
